Is There a Podcast App That Skips Ads? (2026)

The podcast app that skips ads is the one you already use, once the ads are gone from the feed.

No app can do it alone. Podcast ads are stitched into the audio file itself through dynamic ad insertion, so from the app’s point of view, an ad and your host’s voice are the same thing: audio. There’s nothing to detect, so there’s nothing to skip.

That’s why every “ad-skipping app” you’ve tried does something weaker than what its name suggests.

Overcast (iOS): Smart Speed shortens silences between words, and you can set custom skip-forward buttons. Useful. But you’re skipping manually, every ad, forever.

Pocket Casts (iOS/Android): Trim Silence and variable playback speed. Same story: the ads play, just faster.

These are quality-of-life features, not ad removal. You still hear every mattress read.

Remove them before the episode reaches your app:

  1. ZeroAds processes each episode’s audio, finds the ad segments, and cuts them out; in our accuracy tests against hand-labeled episodes it catches about 97-98% of ad time.
  2. You get a private, clean RSS feed for each show.
  3. You add that feed to the app you already use. Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Pocket Casts, Podcast Addict, anything that accepts an RSS URL (47+ apps). The two that don’t: Spotify and Amazon Music.

Your app, your queue, your playback settings, minus the ads.

How to Remove Podcast Ads in 2026 (What Actually Works)

The problem: the ads live inside the audio

Section titled “The problem: the ads live inside the audio”

Ad blockers, premium plans, new apps: none remove podcast ads, because the ads are inside the audio. Cutting them out of the file works, and a few services now do it. This guide compares them.

You’ve tried the first three. Here’s what’s actually happening, and what works to remove podcast ads in 2026.

Ad blockers work on web pages because ads live in separate elements a filter can drop. Podcast ads are baked directly into the audio file, most of them through dynamic ad insertion.

Think of it like this: web ads are stickers on a window (easy to peel off). Podcast ads are ingredients baked into bread (impossible to separate without processing the whole loaf).

More on how the stitching works: What is dynamic ad insertion?

Dynamic Ad Insertion explained: server stitches ads into audio per listener

When you hit play, the server creates a personalized audio file with ads stitched in based on:

  • Your location and timestamp
  • Your device type
  • Your listening history
  • Even which app you’re using

This is why two people listening to the same episode hear different ads. And why browser extensions are powerless here.

Here’s the part nobody warns you about: Premium doesn’t cover podcast ads.

You pay every month for “ad-free” listening. Music? Ad-free. Audio podcasts? Still packed with ads. (Since January 2026, Premium does remove ads from some eligible video podcasts in the US, UK, Australia, and Canada. The audio shows you actually listen to keep their ads.)

Why Spotify does this:

  • Podcast ads are sold separately from music subscriptions
  • Creators get ad revenue regardless of your Premium status
  • Fresh ads get stitched into episodes published months ago, every time you stream or re-download them

The worst part? Spotify blocks external RSS feeds. No workarounds. No hacks. They’ve locked the door.

The full breakdown: Does Spotify Premium remove podcast ads?

Method 1: remove the ads from the audio (most effective)

Section titled “Method 1: remove the ads from the audio (most effective)”

Since the ads are embedded in the audio, you need something that processes the audio itself.

How it works:

  1. The service transcribes the entire audio file
  2. It finds the ad segments: host reads and inserted ads alike
  3. It removes them with clean cuts
  4. You get a fresh RSS feed in your app

The reality:

  • Cuts ads automatically. In our accuracy tests against hand-labeled episodes, ZeroAds catches about 97-98% of ad time, about 85% of every second it cuts lands on labeled ad time, and every cut is listed with timestamps in an episode report you can check.
  • 900 hours of ads removed in three weeks, across more than 10,000 processed episodes. A typical episode loses about 4 minutes of ads. We published the full numbers in our August 2026 podcast ad study.
  • Works with Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Pocket Casts, Podcast Addict, YouTube Music, and any other app that supports custom RSS feeds
  • NOT compatible with Spotify or Amazon Music

Method 2: speed controls and skip buttons (the stopgap)

Section titled “Method 2: speed controls and skip buttons (the stopgap)”

Some podcast apps help you suffer through ads faster:

Overcast (iOS):

  • Smart Speed removes silence between words
  • Custom skip buttons (set your own intervals)

Pocket Casts (iOS/Android):

  • Trim Silence feature
  • Variable playback speeds

You still hear every ad. You just get through them slightly faster.

Cost: Free Best for: Occasional listeners who don’t mind the interruption

Method 3: creator subscriptions (the expensive route)

Section titled “Method 3: creator subscriptions (the expensive route)”

Some podcasts offer ad-free feeds directly:

  • Patreon feeds: a few dollars per show, priced by each creator
  • Apple Podcasts subscriptions: per-show pricing, set by each creator
  • Direct creator sites: varies wildly

The math: Love 10 podcasts? That’s 10 separate subscriptions.

Cost: a per-show subscription, each month, forever Best for: Superfans of 1-2 specific shows

We build one of these tools, so read this table knowing that. It’s still the honest version, because the tradeoffs are real:

A little more on each, honestly:

Herd is a purpose-built ad-skipping podcast player for iPhone and Mac. If you’re comfortable moving to a new player and you live on Apple hardware, it’s a real option. ZeroAds takes the opposite approach: keep the app you have, change the feed.

Podtastic is a podcast app for iPhone and Android that skips ads in place during playback, downloaded episodes included, at about $36/yr with a free tier for two shows. Skipping in the player means you can tap back if it takes too much, which is a real advantage; the tradeoff is that you switch to their app. We make the opposite bet: keep your app, change the feed.

Podly is the open-source project this category owes a lot to. ZeroAds started as a fork of it and grew into its own system, and Podly’s README lists us as the hosted option, so this is family, not rivalry. Free, self-hosted, bring your own server and LLM API keys. If you like running your own services, it’s genuinely good, and there’s even a one-click Railway deploy template. If maintaining a server to avoid mattress ads sounds like a second job, that’s the gap hosted services fill. Full breakdown: Podly vs ZeroAds.

MinusPod is another open-source, self-hosted ad stripper (XDA covered it in June 2026). Same tradeoff as Podly: free software, but you’re the sysadmin.

There are a few smaller hosted services in the category too. The questions to ask any of them are the same ones to ask us: does it work with your app, what does it cut, and can you verify the cuts. (Our answers: any RSS app, ad reads and inserted ads, and yes, every cut is listed with timestamps in the episode report.)

Top podcasts average about 8 percent ad load, roughly 5 minutes per hour, per Magellan AI benchmarks. If you listen 10 hours weekly:

  • about 50 minutes of ads per week
  • more than 40 hours of ads per year
  • Over a full work week of mattress and meal kit promos

The full math, hour by hour: what podcast ads cost you per year.

Stuck in Spotify? There’s no export button. You’ll need to:

  1. Download a real podcast app (Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Pocket Casts)
  2. Search for each show manually
  3. Subscribe one by one
  4. Apply an ad removal method above

Yes, it’s tedious. Takes ~20 minutes for 10-15 shows. But you only do it once.

Already using a standard podcast app? You’re ready. Just add clean RSS feeds.

Does ZeroAds change my podcast app?
No. You subscribe once to a clean RSS feed; your app stays the same.

Is this allowed?
You’re processing a public RSS feed for personal use. We’re also building a revenue-sharing program for creators.

Will it miss some ads?
Occasionally. In our accuracy tests against hand-labeled episodes we catch about 97-98% of ad time; the seconds that slip through you can still skip by hand.

Which apps work?
Any app that accepts custom RSS feeds: Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Pocket Casts, Podcast Addict, Castro, Downcast, YouTube Music, and more. Not Spotify or Amazon Music.
